Cody Heichel is a self-taught painter based in Cleveland, Ohio.

Concerning his work, Heichel says “Painting helps me to absorb and appreciate the spaces, people, and moments which interest me the most. As I paint I am drifting between modes of observing, remembering, and imagining. The combination of translating what is in front of me and exploring what is within me is the part of my artistic process which I find most meaningful. Through this process, subjects are often distilled down to somewhat abstracted forms and colors, but ultimately remain tethered to an understood reality.”

In 2017, Heichel was awarded the Greater Columbus Arts Council Visual Arts Fellowship, and was one of two artists selected for the GCAC’s 2018 Artist Exchange Program in Dresden, Germany, where he participated in a two-month artist residency. He is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, and in 2020 he was awarded The Past Presidents Award at the 100th Annual National Watercolor Society International Juried Exhibition.

His work is represented by Brandt-Roberts Galleries in Columbus, Ohio, and Visual Index in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
